The 18-credit Undergraduate Certificate in Journalism is a cross-disciplinary program open to all Dietrich School majors. Designed to prepare students for today’s evolving media landscape, it combines the core principles of journalism, including clear writing, interviewing, reporting, fact-checking, and ethical practice, with skills increasingly valued in digital media, such as data journalism, data visualization, and multimedia storytelling.
Drawing primarily on courses in Communication and English, students can build an individualized curriculum aligned with their academic and career interests. The program provides hands-on experience across a range of journalistic platforms and formats, including podcasting, longform narrative, and public writing, while also examining contemporary issues such as media law, misinformation, and AI-generated content. Together, these experiences equip students with both practical skills and a critical understanding of journalism in the digital age.
