Meet Grace Papa, the Marketing and Events Coordinator at Bakery Square and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Communication. Grace graduated from Pitt in December 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Rhetoric with certificates in Digital Media, Public & Professional Writing, and Corporate & Community Relations.
As the Marketing and Events Coordinator, Grace covers events, social media, and general marketing for Bakery Square – an open-air shopping mall in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. From concept to completion, she executes community events and marketing initiatives. “We’ve done everything from book club to vintage markets to watch parties to cocktail making classes…you name it!” On social media, Grace plans content, edits videos, and collaborates with local influencers to boost engagement on TikTok and Instagram.
Reflecting on her time at Pitt, Grace credits her Communication degree with giving her a strong foundation in marketing strategy and campaign execution. “I entered my career already understanding how to identify target audiences, craft persuasive messages, and develop creative, out-of-the-box ideas that get people’s attention,” she said.
In particular, courses on media and digital communication helped her see marketing through a broader cultural lens. She credits Dr. Meredith Guthrie, whom she describes as “an incredible professor and advisor who made a huge impact” on her academic experience. One of her favorite memories from Pitt COMMRC was writing an essay analyzing JoJo Siwa’s marketing strategy. “It perfectly captured what I loved about the program – you have the freedom to explore unconventional topics and think deeply about pop culture,” she said.
Today, Grace continues to apply her communication skills daily – especially the ability to express ideas clearly and creatively. “Through my Communication studies, I not only learned about marketing and media strategy but also how to bring ideas together in a cohesive, comprehensible way. That skill—communicating clearly and creatively—is
one of my biggest strengths and helps me stand out in my role.”
Looking ahead, she sees the field of communication evolving rapidly. “Modern marketers are becoming less traditional and more creative – sometimes even a little ‘unserious’ in the best way,” she said. “Advertising today is about being relatable and authentic rather than overly polished or sales driven. Social media has really
accelerated that shift. There’s more freedom and humor in branding now, andaudiences respond to that authenticity. I love being part of that movement toward real, human-centered communication.”
Grace’s advice to current Pitt COMMRC students? “Don’t be afraid to start small or take on a role that lets you learn a bit of everything. Every experience helps you build skills and figure out what you love. Keep finding creative ways to make your work meaningful– and fun!”
