Timothy Barr Awarded 2017 ISHR Research Fellowship
Timothy Barr was awarded a 2017 ISHR Research Fellowship for his paper "Medicina Mentis: Medicine and Topics in Sixteenth-Century Humanism"
The research project examines the cross-pollination of medicine and the ars topica in sixteenth-century humanist and medical texts. First, he offers a brief overview of sixteenth-century developments of the ars topica in humanist dialectic, focusing on the renewed interest in the rhetorical topics. Second, he asks what was the influence of medical conceptions of cause on sixteenth-century topics. Finally, he examines how ars inveniendi was itself treated as a kind of medicine for the erring natural faculties of imagination and invention.
