Lester Olson was invited to the French Academy ceremony in France
Last December 12, 2013, Professor Lester C. Olson, who is the new chair of the Department of Communication, attended a rare ceremony at the Sorbonne, where the French Academy elevated Laurent Pernot into the "Academie des inscriptions et belles-lettres." The French Academy dates back to the middle of the 1600s. Its induction ceremony is a rare one, because the membership is very limited and a member must literally die before a seat becomes available for a new member to be elected to the French Academy.
It's membership consists of many of the finest scholars in France. A high point of the ceremony is the formal presentation of a sword to the newest member. Attendance at the event was by invitation only.
