Christine Feldman, graduate student, is offered a publishing contract
Christine Feldman, currently one of department's three Mellon Predoctoral Fellows in the Humanities, has signed a book publication contract with Peter Lang Publishing in New York for her dissertation in progress. Based partly on her archival work and oral history interviews as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Hamburg from September 2006 to June 2007, the book is tentatively titled, "Mod Culture: A Transnational History" and is scheduled for publication in late 2009 in Lang's Mediated Youth Series, edited by Sharon Mazzarella.
"What I like best about this project," Mazzarella, Professor of Communication Studies at Clemson University, writes of Feldman's work,"is her methodology." It "is a case study of culture..., which [Feldman] intends to bring 'to life through first hand testimony from over seventy Mod participants past and present, vivid descriptions of participant observation of Contemporary Mod scenes,... and vibrant and rarely seen documents and visual materials.'" She praises "Ms. Feldman's strategy of structuring the project by highlight 'four key themes of Mod culture (modernity, youth, gender, and visual style)'
...as it manifests itself across cultures"--the United Kingdom, Germany, the U.S., and Japan. "Because of the approach she is taking in this project, I can envision broad interdisciplinary appeal," Professor Mazzarrella concludes, adding, "the book has a tremendous potential to cross over to a non-academic audience."
