Two New Lecturers for Fall, Meredith Rae Guthrie and
Adam Roth, Offer New Courses
April 2006
Adam Roth (ABD University of Iowa) joins the department as a lecturer in rhetorical and communication studies. He will teach undergraduate courses in public speaking and other related areas and will support an initiative to promote Communication Across the Curriculum. He also will serve as liaison to the writing center and the speaking lab and will assist in developing cross-disciplinary communication curricula.
Roth will teach a special topics undergraduate course this fall titled, "Communicating in Business, Professional, and Workplace Environments." Unit 1 helps students develop and refine oral and written skills necessary in business and professional environments; Unit 2 explores theories of advertising, marketing, and corporate communications; Unit 3 prepares students to use professional communications in the workplace.
Meredith Rae Guthrie (PhD Bowling Green State University) also will begin her position with the department in the fall. In addition to teaching two undergraduate courses per semester in areas such as mass communication, media criticism, and TV and society, she will advise students, oversee internships, lead the department's internship seminar, and, in general, help shape undergraduate education in the department by serving on committees, mentoring students, and fostering intellectual community.
Guthrie's interests are in American popular culture, women's studies, marketing, and Hollywood films. Her dissertation title is "Somewhere In-Between: Tween Queens and the Marketing Machine."
