New faculty to join the Department in Fall 2007
The Department welcomes Shanara R. Reid and Brenton J. Malin to the faculty.
Shanara R. Reid will receive her Ph.D from the University of Georgia in 2007. In Fall semester 2007, she will become an Assistant Professor and Director of Debate in the Department. Her research interests focus on the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation in various social contexts. Her dissertation project focuses on participation of African American students in the Urban Debate League and specifically on how they have questioned established practices in that context and engaged in new ones through use of the spoken word and personal storytelling. She also has studied Hip Hop as a music genre and venue of communication, in particular its role as a mode of vernacular expression and resistance.
Brenton J. Malin received his Ph.D from the University of Iowa in 2000 and has taught at Allegheny College and San Francisco State University. He will join our Department as an Assistant Professor in Media Studies in Fall 2007. He is interested in the relationships between media, cultural practices, and cultural experience. He has published in such journals as in Quarterly Journal of Speech and Journal of Communication Inquiry. His 2005 book, American Masculinity under Clinton: Popular Media and the Nineties “crisis of masculinity” was published by Peter Lang. He will teach media criticism and media theory in Fall 2007.
