Department of Communication

University Announces New Department Chair for Fall 2006
and Thanks Outgoing Interim Chair

Barbara Warnick, PhD, has been hired as the new chair of the Department of Communication beginning fall 2006. Professor Warnick most recently served as a professor of communication at the University of Washington, specializing in communication and rhetorical theory, argumentation, and criticism of new media. She served as department chair there for five years, as well as graduate program coordinator and undergraduate program advisor over the years.

Among Professor Warnick's extensive publications are her most recent books, Critical Literacy in a Digital Era: Technology, Rhetoric, and the Public Interest (2002) and the 4th edition of Critical Thinking and Communication: The Use of Reason in Argument. Her current articles include "Web-Based Memorializing After September 11: Toward a Conceptual Framework," upcoming in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication; and "Online Ethos: Source Credibility in an 'Authorless Environment'" in American Behavioral Scientist. She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan. The Department of Communication welcomes Professor Warnick.

The department also wishes to thank Professor Donald B. Egolf for his valued service as interim communication chair. Professor Egolf continues his research as a faculty member of the department and his teaching, especially communication theory and nonverbal/interpersonal/small-group communication.
