Professor Ronald Zboray and Visiting Scholar Mary Zboray win a Joseph McKerns Research Grant Award from the American Journalism Historians Association

Professor Ronald J. Zboray and Mary Saracino Zboray, Visiting Scholar in Communication, received the Joseph McKerns Research Grant Award at the annual convention of the American Journalism Historians Association on October 10, 2009, for research on newspaper readers for their new book project, "The Bullet in the Book: Reading Cultures during the American Civil War."  The $1,250 award will fund research at the South Carolina Historical Society in Charleston, South Carolina, in December 2009.

The McKerns Research Grant Award is designed to provide research assistance and professional recognition to scholars with distinguished and creative research agendas in media history. The American Journalism Historians Association, founded in 1981, fosters research and teaching of journalism history. It has approximately 400  members.  Through its annual convention, regional conferences, committees, awards, speakers and publications, members work to raise historical standards and ensure that all scholars and students recognize the vast importance of media history and apply this knowledge to the advancement of society.
