WPDU to Host Public Debate on Socially Responsible Investing Feb. 21
UPDATES BELOW
The William Pitt Debating Union will host a public debate addressing guidelines for socially responsible investing in higher education, February 21, 2008 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall room 343. Noted experts and student debaters will consider the question, "Should Universities Adopt the Duke Guidelines for Socially Responsible Investing?" in a format that includes substantial time for audience participation.
Guest Speakers include:
* Michael Goodhart, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Pittsburgh
* Jay Sukits, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, University of Pittsburgh
WPDU student debaters Paul Masters (SAS sophomore) and Lissa Geiger (SAS
junior) will join professors Goodhart and Sukits in the forum, while Brett Powers (SAS sophomore) will lead a panel of student questioners. Department of Communication doctoral student and WPDU assistant coach Cate Morrison will serve as moderator for the event.
Universities played key roles in the national divestment campaign that pressured the South African apartheid government in the 1980s. In the new millennium, calls for similar targeted divestment campaigns have prompted some universities to issue investment guidelines designed to balance financial interests with social responsibility. One example is the policy adopted by Duke University in 2004.
The event is free and open to the public, and may also be viewed via delayed webstream at http://mediasite.cidde.pitt.edu (scroll to the bottom for "William Pitt Debating Union" events)
Parking for the event will be at Soldiers and Sailors Parking Garage ($5 fee), located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard.
