International Students: How to Apply
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application is complete and submitted in accordance with admission guidelines.

Application Checklist
- Application forms: The University of Pittsburgh and the Department of Communication now accept online applications.
- Recommendation forms: Complete the applicant section; sign and forward to your references with your request for letters of recommendation. Your recommendation writers should be professors at your college or university instructors and who know your work well enough to evaluate it and to assess your capacity for graduate study in our department.
- Fee: $50.00 payable via the online application. This fee is not refundable. Applications will not be processed without the paid fee.
- Enclose a statement
of purpose explaining why you want to pursue graduate work in rhetoric
and communication and why you are applying to our program. The
statement should not exceed two typewritten pages. It can be submitted online.
- Enclose a sample
of your written work,
which you believe represents your best effort. The ideal sample would
be an article-length research humanities-oriented paper with proper
documentation, sophisticated and
nuanced argumentation, a broad evidentiary base, and a deft summoning of scholarship from across humanities disciplines.
- Collect and return
the following materials.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Information for this examination may be obtained from the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08541. The GRE application requires the University of Pittsburgh Institution Code 2927, Department Code 4599 Communication. Although you will request that your official results be sent to the University of Pittsburgh, please include a photocopy of your results when submitting your application.
- TOEFL score: Minimum requirement is 550 or 213 on the computer test. The Educational Testing Service must send original results directly to the University. However, please include a photocopy of your results with your application.
- Three completed recommendations, forms, and letters in a sealed envelope from each reference. If you have done graduate work, one of the letters should be from your advisor. These may also be submitted via the online application.
- Transcripts: Certified/notarized native-language version
and English translated version of all academic records, mark sheets,
and transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Also submit certified copies of certificates of diplomas awarded at
completion of studies. Send this material to:
