COMMRC 1731 Special Topics in Rhetoric-Social Movements

Writing intensive, this course explores the dynamics of social movements by considering the rhetorical valence of public arguments advanced by movement rhetors in fields of social action and by reflecting on strategies used by advocates in their efforts to surmount perennial dilemmas in collective struggle. A variety of concepts and primary and secondary texts will anchor class discussion and writing assignments. Requirements include reading quizzes and response statements, thoughtful and regular participation in class discussion, short papers, a midterm examination, and a final project.
COMMRC 1149 (34543) American Environmental Rhetoric
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm-2:15pm CL 358, Bill Fusfield
This course provides students with a solid grounding in American Environmental Rhetoric. We begin by examining some of the European, Asian and Native American conceptualizations of wilderness, nature and humanity that inform the history of American environmental thought. We then analyze several contemporary disputes regarding environmental policies and philosophy. Topics covered include": Henry Thoreau and the transcendentalist influence on contemporary American ecology; Strategies of "Preservationism" and "Conservation,"; From "Silent Spring" to the ritualization of "Earth Day,"; Deep-Ecology vs. Social Ecology; Eco-feminism; The rise of the Science of Ecology; and other contemporary ecological disputes, from global warming to environmental pollution and population growth.
